Miscellany #7
in which we get out the door for soccer on time and don't burn the sausages
Good morning,
This morning I must actually make this quick. The reasons are twofold. Most importantly, I am coaching a soccer game (and my daughter is playing) at 9:30am which means our Saturday morning Bed Rotting (I learned this term from the youths and it is possible I am using it wrong…can you “bed rot” from the living room if breakfast is being cooked and you must stay close) will be cut short. The other reason I must keep this short is because I have started cooking sausages. I put them on the stove and then come over her to type up this little newsletter. And sometimes they get burnt. My family makes fun of me. I cannot let this happen again. I must save face.
This week I finished my sprint through Peace Like a River and it was so lovely. It is a book I enjoy so much each time I read it. Tune in for the Book Swap podcast in a few weeks!
I keep having this idea that I was to slowly read through the old Pulitzer and Booker Prize winners. Has anyone ever taken up a project like this? Is it worth it? Am I fooling myself that I will actually read so many books I’ve never heard of?
Alas…let’s see what’s happening around our corner and many other corners of the internet!

Join for a fun discussion about her book, how homeschooling can look different for different families, and general bookish fun! Dixie is a joy and you won’t want to miss her!
March Madness Reader’s Choice Book Bracket
The voting for Round Three is in the books, but definitely check out that and Round Two and Round One to see the results. The final match up will be….
vs.
China Court by Rumer Godden
Voting for Round FOUR will begin on Tuesday (and close on Thursday). I think we will finally resort to outright bribing and cheating this round. So stay tuned and vote wisely!
I mostly kid…but Hannah Suire and I are pretty excited to have made it to the final round and I can’t promise what campaigning may ensue. I am very excited to read both of these books, but I will campaign for bragging rights!

Random Things I’m Enjoying
If you only click on one of these links, make it this one! The lovely Emily Stimpson Chapman brought her most popular essay, Circling the Drain: Feminism, the Patriarchy, and What Marriages Really Need, out from behind the paywall and you probably need to read it! I find her so helpful on this topic. I will say that this is when I really appreciate printing articles out because it was long and I can only pay attention if I am far away from my computer so maybe use The Substack Print tool to print it out!
I will take some honest takes from Christy Isinger any day! Check out her latest Bits and Bants for some parenting teenagers takes!
Check out Annelise Roberts’ latest Noted post for some great thoughts on purity culture, sick kids, and homeschooling. Also, are her and I living the same life?
The Bad Moms Homeschool are always sharing helpful advice, but I wanted to share their end of the year thoughts with you all in case it will help you get through the last stretch!
Alright, off to go check on those sausages and make sure people are actually ready to get out the door soon! Have a lovely Saturday of leisure and books. Let me know what you’ve been reading or thinking about. And hope to see lots of you on Monday night at Virtual Book Club…it is always a treat!
Till next time,
Kelsie Hartley

Thanks for sharing Kelsie!
I can't believe you're already on The Ink Black Heart! You're moving through those 1000 page books at record speed. And I love love love Peace Like a River, I have not sobbed at the end of a book like I did through that one and it took me totally by surprise! I can only imagine I'd cry even more when I read it again.
